Its 09:52 p.m. why isn't Steph asleep yet!?!

Nihon e ikitai desu!

A last Emi-chan got the dates for the Summer Comiket in Japan! (Steph can't wait.) We're planning out our itinerary for the trip. I insisted (being the geeky nerd I am) to go to Kyoto and learn the historical sites of the Tokugawa era (and consequently view in person all the cool places the Shinsengumi fought at). ^^;;

Perhaps I will finally find my stuffed peropero and all the random doodads I find in the Japanese magazines that make me go "Ooooo! How cute!" ^^;;;

Emi wants to go to Japan for Comiket (one of the largest places you'll find Doujinshi per square foot o.o) and I wanted to go to just see "mythical" Japan. ^^;;; That and I want to go to places like Japan and Hong Kong, and New York and England and Spain when I can "remember" them and pretty much be able to be old enough to appreciate them.

Okay and yes I do want to go there because its got all those neat Anime stores. =P Its just a net-benefit. =)

Listening to: nothing because I forgot to run winamp ^^;;;

Merry Debater Christmas

On a more lighter debater sp/geek note ^^;;
(#) mean that there's a note at the bottom. ^^ Its some terminology that debaters use.

Merry Debater Christmas
by Stˇphan - 12.24.00.

The 12 Debater Days of Christmas

12 campers blocking,
11 cards to cut, (1)
10 f___ed up durges, (2)
9 screwed up teammates,
8 DAs, (3)
7 T Violations, (4)
6 Novii b____ing, (5)
5 stock issues! (6)
4 TOC berths, (7)
3 colored pens,
2 timers beeping, [and]
a big tub full of kritiks! (8)

On the ____ day of Christmas, the WDCA gave to me...

We Debaters

We debaters of policy are
bearing tubs, we spew afar.
kritiks and DAs
T and timers,
carry them, we, to rounds.

Oh, oh,
pen of color,
pen of flow,
pen with ink that doth glow.
Bashing negs,
for wins it begs,
Guide us to thine overview.

Novii We Have Heard Are High

Novii we have heard are high,
slowly flowing bad debate.
As the judge looks to the sky,
we can see they're quite irate.

O-ooooooh-oooooh-oooooh debate.
In a tub of DAs.
O-ooooooh-oooooh-oooooh debate.
With a timer beeping away.

I'm Dreaming of Debate State

I'm dreaming of debate State.
With every single flow I write.(9)
May your DAs vary, and biiite.
And may you win with all the flows you write.

Notes:
(because Steph can't leave you going "huh?")

(1)"cards" arguments we create with evidence to support it.
(2)"durges" I'm not sure what he means here ^^;; I'll just mentally replace "judges" there ^^;
(3)"DAs" dis-advantages (a negative argument)
(4)"T violations" arguments we make on the neg
(5)"novii" novices
(6)"5 stock issues" debate is constructed of 5 main issues, significance, harms, inherency, topicality, and solvency (S.H.I.T.S ^_~)
(7)"TOC berths" author had it as births ^^;;, TOC (Tournament of Champions) berths are "awards" teams get for being excellent debate teams. I think ^^;;
(8)"kritiks" Critiques- a position debaters run that criticizes the resolution/topic
(9)"flow" a term debaters use that means "taking notes"

Merry Christmas Everybody. ^__^

Homework on Christmas

I love my debate team, really I do. And when I moved from a struggling high school team that fell apart during my senior year to a large well established team I thought I would have run away from the problems that plagued my small team (politics etc) because I thought (and this is soooo foolish now that I look back) that they would be mature about things.

I guess it was ingrained in me since I started debate (or any academic activity since then) that you don't quit in the middle of the the season (though I couldn't say much about Tennis lessons and violin lessons ^^;;;). Its *just not done*. I guess its also due to the fact that I love debate so much that I knew that I would be forever bound to it (literally =P).

But I didn't run away from those problems. They came back and haunted at perfectly good team with a great debate coach. Being that I had 3 coaches in the 4 years in high school I understand the problems of coaches. (Also being a coach helps ^^;;) And I know what can happen. In the seven years of debate I have had 4 coaches (2 of them who had gone through divorce). Its difficult to give yourself to a team that may not give you that same repect back. Its hard because you don't know what to expect the next day or the next week.

Which is why I understand my coach and I go and I try my hardest and I put in as much work as I can. I may not cut the best cards, or do the most research but I help in other ways and to be honest the stress has gotten to me. ^^;;; Debate is not a walk in the park but then again I never did like taking the normal way. =P (Well when expected I guess...)

But what I don't understand is this political BS that is going on in the team. Its understandable that we have good debaters (not me =P) and they know they are good. But its another thing to use that knowledge and pretty much beat back people's esteem with it. And worst of all wave it around like a sense of power. I hated that in HS and I hate it MORE in NOW since (and here is that blind faith again -_-) I thought people would be more mature about it.

I admit that seeing everybody else at least make it to out-rounds and me (the junior debater trying to get her partner to at least make it to tournaments and then get frustrated at him for not going with the flow) not succeeding when I was supposed to, its frustrating and its disappointing. Especially when I have a semi successful IE (individual events/speech) career. I'm just as competitive as the rest and it bothers me when I'm not advancing as fast as the rest (and I'm hampered by a AWOL partner who goes to follow Pearl Jam for 2 weeks @_@). It bothers me that my "effort" goes unappreciated and I pretty much get the short end of the stick (tho it doesn't always seem that way I know ^^;;;).

Being that I am quite selfish I wanted to go to Nationals. It was always my dream to go compete in Nats. I don't care if I didn't break to out-rounds but I wanted to be part of the group that competed in nats. Secondly, since I have 4 years (8 semesters) eligbility alotted to me I have to watch what I do in debate wisely. I cannot compete forever. (Though I wish I could compete for maybe 2 more years ^^;;;). And with 3 semesters left out of the 8, I am definitely not going to waste my time and energy debating with random partners when I can hold that eligibility and debate with a permanent stable partner that will go to Nats with me. Its not too much to ask. But with the advent of my current partner deciding to nearly quit mid round and quitting mid tournament I realized that I should save my eligibility. I hope and wish that my coach sees that I am doing this not for a selfish reason (unless that selfish reason is purely educational and that I wanted to debate with a permanent partner and stay debating with my coach o.o) and that I put debate first (its always been first @_@ ever since high school).

Which is why I hate it when people pull this prima donna shit and go "Well *I* wasn't informed so I'm not going!" which is the last straw that breaks the camel's back (my coach Shawn) who decides to not take us to a very important tournament. I sit there and think "You idiot! We debated at the very same tournament LAST YEAR!" I got this news right before my pre-calc midterm which had me wound up and unable to sleep the night before the most important final of my semester. I was so mad that our members decided to flake on the most important tournaments of the year because they didn't feel like going! Not to sound elitist because its not but its just a sentiment I carried with myself since I started debate in high school, that kind of attitude is not one I want on a team. And its definitely the kind of attitude that I answer back with, "then you don't deserve to debate, talent and all." To me that does not put debate first (it puts their pride first).

Which is why Tony, Tanzy, and I are cutting and creating this whole new position in 3 days so we can see if we can GO to the winter tournaments. These are the last two tournaments I am debating for this debate season. Because of some people's poor judgements they jeapordized the team from learning.

Which is why I am willing to sift through 250 pages of articles (during Christmas DAY) to go to this tournament that despite some doubts I know I will enjoy.

I dunno, to me I have always shirked pride for debate, I have redefined myself and doubted myself for debate, I have given up two of my New Year's celebrations for debate. I passed the millenium with the team instead of family. I always put debate first. I guess its just me.

Card Captor Sakura Dolls in the US! =D

I did a stupid thing yesterday =P I thought my pre-calc final was at 8 am so I get there and its not at the class (or any of the other classrooms that class was at) and I panicked, and I ran all over the school and I finally found my professor's office and found out that the final was at 10:45. So I leave embarrassed and sweaty and go home to shower @_@.

And yes I passed it (not with flying colors, mine sort of flew then slammed into the ground ^^;;) and I passed the class with a solid C so I'm extremely pleased cuz that means I know the material well (but prolly with the help of a tutor for calc @_@).

On another note the link above is a link to a picture of a Card Captor Sakura doll (technically its a Card Captors Sakura fashion doll ^^;;) and I'm all for getting it (also for the little plastic Kerochan too! ^^;;) and they have Kerochan beanbag plushies! I want one! =D

Also good news, if you read Tanzy's Blog you'll notice that we're both on the debate team and were awaiting a very important message about whether or not we were going to Swings this winter break. We got the good news that we were going, the bad news is that its a priveledge that can be taken away at any moment. And we have to do massive research before hand. @_@ I managed to do some the night before so all I need to do is sift through it and find some stuff. @_@ And I thought my finals were over.

Listening to: Shiina Ringo - Remote Controller (Remokon) Its a great song as well as Stoicism ^^

Steph does the dance of joy

I passed pre-calc! Its amazing! I did fairly well on the 160 pt test =D (well enough to maintain a very solid C in precalc!) The information was posted up about an hour ago. ^^;;;

That's about it now to pack and go to bed so I can catch the train home tomorrow. =D

listening to: my bed saying "sleep! sleep!" acutally its Erasure's "Always" ^^

Poor Ringo ^^;;;

Ringo is the name of my computer. Mostly because I have these cute "paperdoll" stickers on my monitor frame and so I named my computer Ringo (and it used to run sweet!) Currently Sticker Ringo is wearing a smart "green" winter outfit of a green dress and a matching green beret. ^^

But Ringo the Computer is getting old and she can't handle programs like she used to. Also I think my monitor is failing on me, the upper right hand corner has a weird shade of orange that sort of changes the color any page (html color background or not). Sadly I think its time to get a new computer.

Unfortunately I'm attached to Ringo, she's run as best as she could (on a P2 celeron with 333 Mhz) and I don't know wheher to just fix her or just replace her. I wonder if I should replace the monitor too since its going a bit bad.

On another note, I archived. The link should be up soon as soon as I'm not so tired. Yesterday I met up with Tiff my friend and we went shopping at Jtown. ^^ I picked up a free (very pink) Utena poster that Mikado had in the "free poster bin" and ELT's Remixes (an old cd but still good). I also went shopping at Target, where I got a new hairdryer and shampoo and a lamp! And I got this moose for Tanzy that makes yaoi-like sounds. (I am NOT kidding it grunts and groans!) We pretty much cleaned out Kino of CIEL and Wings magazines. ^^;; The poor workers at Kino were so confused that I had bought 2 volumes of Ciel and wings that they just sort looked a me funny. ^^;;; But in the end I picked up the Preetia manga, CIEL, and GanGan Wing (the mag that Kagerou Nostalgia runs in) I should post up my observations in Not on the Shelf soon. I'll probably be doing a summary for Preetia for Emichan's random shoujo manga page the story is this facinating combination of part magical girl, part Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and part Cinderella. Oh and 4 of the dwarves are quite tall bishounens. ^^

I also picked up a kanji dictionary to get the "gist" (because I don't consider myself adept at the Japanese language at all =P) of the story behind Mikan no Tsuki. Its interesting what the background story is. That should go up on Not on the Shelf too.

Aside from that my day has been productive if not tiring. ^^; Baibai.

Listening to: Every Little Thing: The Remixes (yes that cd is like 3 years old but ehhh its still good. Track 4 is very retro! =D)
