and all I wanted was a copy of the Unabomber's Manifesto which suprisingly its out of print and no longer found anywhere o.o (the corporations are out to put this book out of print!)
Then I found the full manuscript in Ebay and it was the actual printed Washington Post newspaper with the unabomber's manuscript in it. I almost bid for it but then I thought, "Do I really want it that bad?" o.o so I stopped and found it online. ^^;; I wonder if the CIA/FBI are tracking my search for it...
Anyways, no I am not crazy... I'm just interested in a new weird form of technology. Ok ok I'm weird... but that was a given.
Listening to: Duvet - Boa - Serial Experiments Lain Opening song (hmmm that adds intersting twist...)
Anyways, I have compiled a short list of colleges/universities that I want to go to. ^^;; this is based on The US News & World Report's ranking list (and my personal preference) 1) GWU Law - (Wash DC) My top choice its ranked 23 out of the top 50 law schools in the Nation which is rather nice. Its ranked 2nd in the field of Intellectual Property Law (which is the closest thing to Tech Law I'll prolly get to). Berkeley's Bolt being the #1 rank. ^^;; I've visited the college before and its perfect! 2) University of Texas, Austin - My 2nd choice, the humidity might get to me but it has a fairly reputable law school (and #9 in the Intellectual Property Rankings) its ranked #15 in the list. (Emi went there too ^^) 3) University of California, Hastings - Yes its a UC and its accreditted by the UC system ^^;; (its ranking is I think 31) its 106 years old and in San Francisco (wow!) this is probably my best bet. Their tech law program is so/so (its not even ranked in the tech law list =P) 4) Santa Clara University - its a 3rd Tier grad school but its ranked #5 in Intelletual Property Law (I don't know what to make of these rankings to be honest). But I like school its near home and I know the Director of Forensics there. 5) University of San Francisco - Its a 3rd Teir but #27 in Tech Law. My mom graduated from their Comp Sci program so I guess it has its merits ^^;;;. Others that I may look at: NYU, Georgetown, UCLA, and for the hell of it UC Berkeley. Colleges/Univ.s I will not even consider: American University - (Wash DC) the Campus is just bleh. This is based on its location and its chances of diversity. For some reason its a very very important factor when I select colleges. (21 years in the Bay Area sort of spoiled me ^^;;;), and if they have a fairly good transportation system. And now for something completely different... I won a cool Saiyuki mug on Ebay! Listening to: At Last - Ella James - Wow. This woman sings with her soul. Wow.
I found dream that I could speak to, a dream that I could call my own... (Ella James - At Last)One of the coolest songs I've ever heard was Ella James' "At Last" which is this great song that just sort of snaps at you and you think "yeahhhhhhh that's what it will feel like when I find my love." Of course this blog entry is not about falling in love its about random stuff. ^^;;; (That and Shiina Ringo's Remoto Controller is sort of blasting out any romantic tendancies I have tonight). More about Nanotechnology The term nanotechnology comes from nanometer, or a billionth of a meter; for visual purposes we can say that a typical virus is about 100 nanometers across. Remember in Star Trek those cool little sparkling floating lights that would swirl around "space" and then flash! something was created in the holodeck, or food was made, or someone was beamed up? Imagine those little sparklies (not those **sparklies**) as nanobots (but those are very very visible nanobots...) this is a technology that Eric Drexler. Ray Kurzweil, and a few other scientists and tech-heads started to talk about at this conference a few years ago. Remember that the material that you are using for a mouse is the same components as say... the magnet on your fridge or the banana on the kitchen counter top. They all have atomsin common. They are all a combination of molecules. Nanotechnology are small tiny robots the size of a compound of atoms that can deconstruct your mouse and turn it into cheese. Technology so small that it would need millions upon millions of copies of itself to do it. Ok, so that sounds weird, and you're thinking Steph has gone off the deep end. (I got a few weird looks from judges at a debate tournament when I told them this very same story... they were amused that Nanotechnology could take a desk in the room and turn it into bread.) But the technology isn't that far off. Genetics is already a form of nanotechnology, its a manipulation of sugar molecules(DNA). In 1959, one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists, name Richard Feynman, gave a talk titled "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom," in which he suggested that it would one day be possible to build machines so tiny they would consist of just a few thousand atoms. Anyways, genetics and bio-technology was the technology of the 21st century. (and it got us some mixed results, rice that could fend of blindness vs. protesters that believe that messing with "god's work" is wrong and immoral...) but the elements hold true for this form of technology. Like any other form of technology (radio, nuclear, etc. ...) we embrace it with excitement at what it can do for us and how it makes our lives easier, we condemn those who protest it (Greenpeace protesters over Genetically Modified Food for example) and condone those who promote it (i.e. Big capitalist companies who view it as more profitable). And at the same time there are a small % of those who do neither but sit there and realize the consequences of how that "current" form of technology can impact future generations. This is why this new form of technology is so new that its hasn't even figured out crawling yet while Genetics is on its terrible two's (humor me for the sake of the bad analogy I'm known for bad analogies ^^;;). But this is when we can decide the course of how this technology will go. Bill Joy (chief scientist and co-founder of Sun) is the opposite of Kurzweil. He argues in Wired Magazine that we could become dependent on technology (Matrix anybody?) Ironically, I'd suggest reading the Unabomber's Manifesto (no its not crazy ramblings) its actually a well written argument on whey technology is spining wildly out of control. I'm picking it up as soon as Borders restocks it ^^;; But Bill Joy's article has a nice piece of it. The Unabomber called those who wanted to limit technology luddites. Which is what I guess I am in some ways. I don't mind technology (like the Remote control... or the CD player... or the computer...) but some moral implications of technology (cloning, bio-technology creating super-viruses...) sort of make me a luddite. Which is why I want to be a tech lawyer, and specifically the morality of technology (which is probably a non-existant job... but oh well I'll just become a law professor...). I want to be able to mold the way technology goes for the rest of the millenium/century. I want to be at the forefront of something that can shape the rest of the future. Its a very lofty ambition, but it can happen. ^^ Listening to: California Dreamin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain I.B.M. This blog's theme: Music! (well mostly)The line is from Mr. Robot from the group Styx (its that song in the VW commercial ^^) I've had it stuck in my head so I finally downloaded it from Napster and listened to it. Yet this is an interesting page on it. Its kinda interesting, the song sort of sounded like a mini 80's musical and then I read the lyrics and the liner notes (link is above) and realized that the song had a really neat story. Some of the lines of this song is interesting like: The problem's plain to see: too much technology. Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize. Which sort of makes me think about this book I'm reading Engines of Creation by Eric Drexler. ^^ Who is Eric Drexler? I'll get into that in another blog (Steph has to sleep soon), but he talks about Nanotechnology which is the new form of 22nd centry technology that inspired me to become a Tech Lawyer. Nanotechnology is smalltechnology (nano=small) basically microscopic molecule size technology (sounds a little Star Trek-like but its a realistic feasible technology and that is a scary thought!) I love overseas versions of Jpop cds now if only they did the same with Anime soundtracks (instead of Son May...) I'd be happy... I just ordered Dragon Ash's Greatful Days single (it has 3 remixes) I've been wanting to get this song for months! I heard it in the store People Video in Japantown and I went nuts. It uses the same opening guitar piece that Smashing Pumpkin's Today uses. Today is my favorite song of all time (and consequently Smashing Pumpkins is my favorite band too ^^) My ultimate dream is to have a alarmCD where it wakes me up to that song blasting out my ears every morning. I'd love it! =D Did I ever mention how much I like fleece? Especially when its nice microfiber fleece. Its like being in bed but not (ok that makes no sense and it probably sounds weird...). But the point is, that fleece is so soft and fluffy and fuzzy. ^^ I decided to put up a LaLa page and I'm in the process of scanning some of the pages of LaLa2. For now it will concentrate on stories I'm familiar with but eventually I will have info on most of the stories that run in it. Considering I'm getting a subscription for LaLa I might as well put up a page for it. ^^ Its the first telephonebook I've found where I like 75% of the stories in there. ^^ Of course this is all contingent on when I finish my KKJ page and finish transfering my Fanfiction pages. ^^;;; Listening to: Paul VanDyke - The Riddle Featuring St. Etienne I got this cd mostly for the St. Etienne tracks on it. ^^;; (St. Etienne is one of my favorite British Pop bands they have evolved into a nice 70's synthesizer sound that I really really like. I've been listening to them since about 97-98 when they released Good Humor they have been peforming wayyyy before that though. =) Sarah Cracknell is an amazing singer, her voice is faboo (to use the words of my middle sister Fran.) I need to pick up their new album Sound of Water and Interlude (which will be out by the end of next month! wheeeeee!). Other singers/bands I like: Smashing Pumpkins!, Dido, Tori Amos, Shiina Ringo (wooooo!), Garbage, The Cardigans (Gran Turismo CD is soooooo good!), AIR (a really good french eletronica band ^^), Blur (well mostly for the song Coffe and TV) notice a theme in the music I like? ^^;; and Stereolab (I only have 1 of their cds but I want more) ... ummm I forgot the rest. ^^;;
# 1 Asahi Hinata
We went to eat thai food and next to the thai food place (1 door past the bakery which is next to the restaurant) a Boba-tea place opened! (finally!) and I went to get some boba-tea after dinner. The cool thing about this tea place is how they "cover" their drink cups. They seal this film of plastic over the cup and hand it to you bottom up. I thought "wtf? they're gonna spill it!" but when I got it I noticed the seal and I was like "coooooooool!" and the straws have a pointed end so you pierce the lid and drink! =D I know I'm getting old when I "want" to forget about my birthday and I keep thinking about it (oh and the fact that I got excited when I got a new pack of socks ^^;;;). I wish I stayed 16 or 17 forever. This is because I'm too lazy to email it to myself: host: 1Cust89.tnt1.alameda.ca.da.uu.net (63.11.174.89) Uhhh yeah... Listening to: Cornflake Girl - Tori Amos (I love this song! The lyrics sort of meld into another and its just really coool.)
Spring is coming and that means a few things (well duh spring) spring semester, my birthday, and Fanime. This year Fanime is end of March beginning of April. (Steph notes that she will be 21 by then... weird...). This just brings me to this entry's topic of Conventions of the year 2001. Depending on whether or not I get to do a repeat performance at Sun this summer (I interned there, it was great =) it pretty much determines whether or not I get to go to any con after Fanime (like Akon which the con I enjoy the most). I don't know but I enjoy work (well work that isn't retail...) There's a satisfaction of working all day and coming home to eat sleep and then go back to work (there's a redeeming quality to this monotony that I'm gettin to... really!) that and the atmosphere and the stress (yeah I like stress...) and then when you get paid you appreciate what you get in return. ^^ A friend of mine said that that feeling can be addicting. I dunno, I don't mind giving up my free summer to work, I don't mind giving up a social life to work. Not when it means I don't have to worry during the school year about whether or not I can afford to eat at the next debate tournament. (ok ok it all comes down to debate duh...) *Steph ends her musings and turns back to cons! Sorry.* Anyways I love cosplay. ^^ I planned to cosplay as like 4 different characters but at the rate I'm going I'll probably be studying at Fanime (last year I did that too ~_~). I like cosplaying as characters that I enjoy (and have a slight chance of resembling, not blond characters for me ^^;;;). Oh dear I'm doing a poor job of staying on track. Anyways I'm working in my Jeanne page still I scanned some cool pictures of Noin that will be my index page for the Jeanne site. I am also considering putting up small info pages on the manga I read (like Kagerou Nostalgia, Mekakushi no Kuni, etc...) some manga I read I leave thinking "wow I should put up a page!" and then I remember the pages I have to transfer and stop. ^^;; Maybe I'll put up a LaLa info page... (but that means I'll have to do a lot of scanning which means I need to get a scanner... hmmm...) oh well... Listening to: nothing ^^;;
Going to the dentist this morning was a sign that my week of "freedom" is over ;_; (oh well I miss my family anyways ^^;;) and its time to go visit my family where they'll wake me up at 11 am. =P Oh well... On another note my Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne page is almost done (well the content aspect that is) the images and the rest need to be done. ^^;; It will be put up while I wait for my friend to finish this super cool looking one. (hint hint) It will be mostly text based and less image based. I'm tired of having my images being stolen. (You could read the rant here.) =P But apparently I keep getting hits from the old site. (I took the page "down" and added the new url to doki-doki.) So I guess people still want to see the page... ^^;; Off to see the family! Listening to: Vivaldi - The Four Seasons (I love this CD!)
Are you of questionable sanity? ( ) yes ( ) no ( ) not sure Um I think this page is by far the most updated page. (Well considering I just archived after 4 days ^^;;) but oh well...I set up my class schedule. The problem with my schedule is the fact that all the classes I'm taking conflict with possible times to go do some sort of exercise (unless I want to wake up at like 7 am =P ugh). This sort of perturbs me since spring semester is when I usually have time to take 2 classes of swimming and something else (like Karate or aikido) but this time its like no time. I may have to join a club or something. =P Anyways my schedule looks busy from 10-3 pm every day (M-F) with a few breaks on some days, I have a 5 hrs with no break on M&W but I'd rather do that than have to wait 2 hrs for a class.
Hehehe I ran the Utena Character Selector Test and the Fushigi Yuugi Test. Here were my results. Some of the questions were funny. "Are you of questionable sanity?"
And the Bebop Selector: Listening to: Shiina Ringo : Remoto Kontroller (Remmote Controller ?) - This song is just as cool as Stoicism. It just shows the range that Ringo can perform at. ^^
